The Qatari riyal

The Qatari riyal, riyal of Qatar or rial of Qatar (ISO code QAR) is since 1967 the official currency of Qatar. The riyal is issued by the Central Bank of Qatar. A Riyal is divided into 100 dirhams.

Before carrying out a reform, the Saudi riyal was used for a short period of time, until finally the riyal was introduced in Qatar and Dubai.

The Saudi riyal was set at 1,065 rupees, while the Qatari riyal was set on a 1 to 1 exchange rate with the Rupee before its devaluation.

Until 1973, Qatar and Dubai jointly issued the riyal. However, after the incorporation of Dubai to the UAE, Qatar continued issuing the riyal and Dubai adopted the emiral dirham.

Did you know?

  • Until 1966, Qatar managed the rupee of the Gulf as country currency. But when India devalued its Rupee, Qatar and other nearby territories decided to issue their own currencies. At this time Qatar and Dubai issued their coins together.
